This article covers a subject distinct from verifying wealth. What is at stake here is not money but control.
And it needs saying plainly: high-net-worth circles are not spared profiles with a high capacity to do harm.
Three structural reasons, none of which is a generalization about wealthy men:
- Some traits that favor economic success — determination, tolerance for risk, the ability to decide without agonizing — partly overlap with traits that are problematic in intimate relationships: low empathy, instrumentalization, a need for control.
- Money removes constraints. An ordinary man who behaves badly bears the social and material consequences. A wealthy man can often buy them, move them, or silence them.
- Financial asymmetry is itself an instrument of control, independently of anyone’s original intent.
None of this means these men are dangerous. It means that the consequences of a mistake are heavier there, and harder to undo. The first grid, how to spot a fake rich man, checks the wealth; this one checks the man.
The ten signs
1. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ How he treats staff
How does he speak to the waiter, the driver, the assistant, the housekeeper? And above all: how does he react to a mistake — a late dish, a wrong order?
What you see there is what he will apply to you the day you stop being pleasant to him. There is no exception to this rule. The only question is the date.
It is first on the list because it is the most reliable of all, and because it is observable on the first date.
2. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Excessive early intensity (love bombing)
Very early declarations, plans for the future by week two, constant presence, significant gifts, “I have never felt this before.”
It is pleasant. It is also the first movement of a documented three-phase pattern: idealization → devaluation → discard. The initial intensity serves to create rapid attachment and a moral debt.
The test: a healthy relationship builds gradually. Intensity out of proportion to duration is always a signal, never a compliment.
3. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Progressive isolation
Criticism of your friends (“she isn’t good for you”), your family, your work (“you could stop, I earn enough”), your activities.
It always presents itself as care or generosity. Isolation is the necessary condition of any controlling relationship. A partner who shrinks your world shrinks your options.
Absolute countermeasure: never give up your work, your friends or your activities in the first year. Under no pretext, however pleasant, however financially rational.
4. ⚠️⚠️ Hot and cold
He is very present, then distant without explanation, then returns. You spend your time trying to work out what you did.
That is intermittent reinforcement: the most addictive attachment mechanism there is, and the most destructive. It is not clumsiness, it is a pattern.
5. ⚠️⚠️ Rewriting reality
He denies having said something you remember precisely. He reformulates what you said. He tells you that you are too sensitive, that you are exaggerating, that you misunderstood.
That is gaslighting. The most reliable symptom: you begin to doubt your own memory, and you start keeping evidence of your conversations.
If you feel the need to keep written records to prove to yourself what happened, that alone is a sufficient signal.
6. ⚠️⚠️ All his exes are crazy
No exception, no share of responsibility, no regret.
A balanced person acknowledges their part in at least one breakup. A total absence of responsibility tells you exactly how he will talk about you.
7. ⚠️⚠️ Control dressed as protection
“I’d rather you took my driver.” “Stop working, I’ll take care of everything.” “Take this card.”
Generosity is pleasant and often sincere. The distinguishing test is simple: does it increase or reduce your options?
A gift that increases your autonomy (training, an investment in your name, time) is a gift. A “gift” that reduces it (stopping work, depending on his driver, living in his house with no lease) is a mechanism, even when offered in good faith.
8. ⚠️ Contempt for rules
He drives fast and dangerously, he lies casually about small things, he works around rules, he considers himself above procedure.
A man who believes the rules do not apply to him will also believe the rules of a relationship do not apply to him.
9. ⚠️ Pressure on your boundaries
You say no to something and he insists, negotiates, jokes, sulks, or starts again a week later.
A healthy man accepts a no the first time. It is the simplest and most reliable test on the list — and one more reason to set boundaries early: they function as tests.
10. ⚠️ Vagueness about his marital status
Divorcing for three years, “separated but still living together”, never available at weekends, no introductions to anyone.
It is a position in which you have no recourse.
What to do
| Number of signs | Course of action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Observe. Clumsiness is possible |
| 2–3 | Slow down. No irreversible decisions: no moving in, no resignation, no money, no isolated trip. Talk to someone outside it |
| Sign 1, 2, 3 or 5 alone | Enough to stop. These are the four most reliable predictors |
| 4 or more | Leave. No explaining conversation, no last chance. These patterns are not corrected inside the couple |

The eight non-negotiable safety rules
| # | Rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Never give up your work in the first year | It is your ability to leave |
| 2 | Keep your own home | Moving in is the hardest decision to undo. If you do, put it in writing: cohabitation agreements |
| 3 | Never lend money, sign a guarantee, or accept a transfer | See the nine signs of fake wealth |
| 4 | Keep an account in your name alone, with three months of expenses | The most important rule of all |
| 5 | Always have the means to get home alone | Everywhere. ID, card, cash, charged phone |
| 6 | Always tell a friend where you are and who with | Especially for a first trip or an isolated place |
| 7 | Never sign a document without your own attorney | Including a prenuptial agreement |
| 8 | Keep your friends and your family | The first defense against isolation |
Leaving safely
- Tell one or two trusted people beforehand.
- Retrieve your belongings, your documents and your digital access before you announce anything.
- If you live with him, organize your departure before you raise it.
- Change your passwords, check location sharing on your phone.
- Announce it once, calmly, without negotiating.
If you are threatened — United States
National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233, free and available 24/7. Text START to 88788. 911 in an emergency. His wealth changes nothing about your rights. Legal aid exists in every state, and protective orders can be requested regardless of the other party’s means.
The most effective protection
It is not the list above. It is one reference person: a friend to whom you tell the truth about your relationships, including the awkward parts, and to whom you explicitly give the right to warn you.
Coercive control depends on isolating your judgment. It does not survive one clear-eyed outsider looking at it.
