The Social Calendar: Where Established Money Is, Month by Month
The events that matter are rarely the famous ones. They are the ones people return to every year, where you start recognizing faces, and where there is a natural reason to talk. Here is the year in the US, the UK and the Europe American money travels to, with each event coded for access and rated for relevance. Dates follow 2026 patterns and move every year: check before you book.
How to read the calendar
- O Open, or an ordinary ticket. You can go on your own.
- V Volunteer, crew, committee or partner. You are there because you work there, so you belong there.
- I Invitation only. Someone brings you, or you are not there. Paying to get close is rarely worth it.
- ✕ Cliché. A crowd, no repetition, and no legitimate reason to speak to anyone.
One to three stars, rated for a single purpose: how likely you are to meet established, available men in a setting you can return to, which is why a club event scores higher than a family one.
January
The quiet month, and the best one in the mountains, provided you go midweek: the resorts are half empty and lunch on the mountain lasts as long as it needs to. In New York, the year opens with antiques rather than parties.

Three events a year, not thirty
Choose one in spring, one in the fall and one in winter, and go back to the same ones every year: repetition is what turns faces into a circle. Prefer V to O, and O to I. An event where you work beats an event where you pay, which beats an event where you wait for an invitation, and the invitation usually comes from the event where you worked. Then arrive informed: exhibitor, sponsor and committee lists are generally public, and twenty minutes of reading tells you who you will be talking to. The famous lines of a calendar, the Grand Prix grandstand, the after-parties, August in the Hamptons, cost the most and lead the least far.
In The Fortuna Method, Module 8 holds the complete calendar with the reasoning behind each rating, how to find your way into each event, and an exercise to build your own year around three of them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the social season?
In England, the Season runs from May to July: the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, Henley and Glyndebourne. In the US, the equivalent is the fall, from September to December, when the galas, opera openings and auctions return, and in Florida the Palm Beach season, from Thanksgiving to Easter with its peak from January to March. Summer and the holidays belong mostly to family.
What events do wealthy people go to?
Less often the famous ones than you might think. The events where established money returns year after year are auction previews, horse sales such as Saratoga and Keeneland, regattas, art fairs like TEFAF and Art Basel, rowing and racing weekends, and charity committees. Many are open to the public. The red-carpet events tend to be invitation only, and are mostly useful as a topic of conversation.
Is the Kentucky Derby or the Met Gala worth going to for meeting people?
The Met Gala is invitation only: on this calendar it is for conversation, not for a plan. The Derby has two faces, reserved seats and boxes on one side, the infield on the other, and only the first is worth the trip. In both cases, a smaller event you can return to every year, such as a race meet at Keeneland or Saratoga, will usually do more for you.
Do these dates change every year?
Yes. This calendar follows the 2026 patterns, and most events shift by a few days or weeks each year; some change venue entirely. Treat the months here as a guide, check each event’s official site before you book anything, and block your three chosen events in January, before the rest of the year fills up.
